Dear Families,

Studies show that the more a child reads, the better reader they become. Reading also expands their knowledge and increases their vocabularies. At Pioneer Elementary we strive to help our students develop a love for reading so they become life-long learners.

This year we are "chomping at the bit" to kick off our 40 Book Challenge. We feel that if our students are reading 20-30 minutes each night they can rise to this challenge. By reading each night they will become better readers and experience success in all academic areas. "It doesn't matter what they read, it only matters that they read." (Stephanie Harvey)

It is important that your student reads books that are at an appropriate level. This means that the book should not be too easy, or too difficult. Like Goldilocks we like things that are "just right".

Tips to help your child hit their stride and rise to the challenge:

Start reading now- 10 books for each quarter.
Take your child to the public library.
Make sure your child is reading 20-30 minutes every night!
Celebrate their reading accomplishments.
Encourage your child to read daily.

We are so excited to be off to the races. We know that this challenge will not only help our students become better readers but it will also be a fun way to increase the time our students spend reading.

Thanks for your support!

Guidelines:

Please record your books on your recording log. You will receive a new reading log each quarter. (if you need a new one, please ask Mrs. Sumner)
Check the back of your reading log for fun ideas to help reach your goal.
When your log is full, Turn it into your teacher. Don't forget this important step.
Students, You will be recognized at school for completing your log each quarter.
Grades K-3 any book counts.
Grades 4-6 no easy picture books. Books just over 100 pages count as 1. Books that are well over 100 count as 2. ie: Charlotte's Web 184 pages= 2 books. Harry Potter 317 pages= 3 books.
Good luck, lets go the distance and win the prize!
